First, it is important that you have a guitar and are using one that you are comfortable with. If you do not, completing this step will be difficult. For beginners, getting your fingers to go where you want them is one of the hardest parts in learning guitar. This is especially true when playing chords. A fluid motion of four fingers moving to different frets in different directions—what could be difficult about that? Even experienced players can struggle when it comes to the more complex chord changes. This blog will tell you how to be a master in only 7 steps and tips!!
Make It Easy: Remember, chord shapes are movable. Regardless of the actual chord you want to play, It is important that you know the frets and position right so when you play, it sounds better.
Play Cleanly: In fretting multiple strings, it is common to produce unwanted string noise. When learning unfamiliar shapes, practice picking each note individually to ensure the chord sustains clearly. This is a method that will allow your fingers to get used to the feeling of the cord.
Break It Down: When switching between difficult chords, try working on moving from one place to another. Look for common fingerings to minimize movement where possible. Doing this will help you play without having to look or worry about missing the chord. Also remember to take notes so you can come back to it.
Focus on Rhythm: Learning chords is only the first step; the next part is keeping them in time! It is important that you learn how to read a metronome. This will make the process of following the rhythm a lot easier
Look for Similarities: The keys, tempos, and chord voicing will change, but the underlying movements are often very similar. Make sure you listen to look for the ones that sound the same. It will forever change the way you play the guitar
Intervals Are Key: When shifting a shape to different keys, the notes change but the intervals do not. Learn to recognize intervals within common shapes so that your fingers get used to the feeling of it. This is will stick in your head a lot more but also make your playing sound smooth.
Get Creative:. Lastly, the best part about guitar and music, creating your own type. Experiment with anything you’re unfamiliar with to create a completely new sound. Once you are fully comfortable with the way you are playing, change it up according to the song and your comfort.

Getting started
This is a great starter-guitar. I bought this for myself when I first started learning. It's a good one.
I bought this kids guitar for my sister when she first started showing interest in playing. I got her the pink one, but there are other colors available as well. This also comes with a capo and other materials that are essential for beginning.
Lastly, this fingerpicking manual will help you learn how to play finger-style. I first used this when I wanted to learn a song and it was an amazing (and inexpensive) resource.
