Learn How to Tap Strafe in 5 Easy Steps! -Apex Legends

Updated: Dec 28, 2023

Apex Legends is a battle royale game that has a visible skill gap between players. If you’re a long-time player who's looking for a way to get better, chances are you stumbled upon tap strafing. Tap strafing is a movement technique that allows players to turn up to 180 degrees mid slide jump. This can be useful for not only looking flashy, but sharply turning corners behind cover. Mastering this technique will allow you to outperform all opponents who do not know how to tap strafe.

Tutorial

Tap strafing is often looked at as one of the hardest mechanics to learn in Apex, but it’s actually really easy! Just follow the 5 easy steps below:

1. Go into your in-game settings and set the secondary bind for Move Forward as Scroll Wheel Up or Down. This will be essential in the future in order to be able to turn in midair efficiently.

2. While in the range, practice sliding and jumping at the same time in order to gain air time. Hopefully you should have this down beforehand because this is an essential skill in the game (and one you should already know with any amount of playtime).

3. Once you get that down, try jumping and sliding but during the airtime, attempt to turn your character using your mouse. While you are doing this, let go of “W” and press (and hold) the key that goes in the direction you want to turn (if you want to turn left, press only “A” and move your mouse left).

4. Now try doing the same thing but this time utilize the scroll wheel key bind you set earlier while turning your mouse midair. This works because of how the game is programmed. It processes each “W” input as you try to move and turn extremely fast.

5. Practice and once you get it down once, try to do it multiple times in order to implement it into your gameplay.

Uses of Tap Strafing

Tap strafing can be used for a variety of different situations. They can be used prior to b-hop healing in order to evade enemy fire.

  • The sharp 90-degree turns can be useful to turn corners while running away from the enemy (something that is more common than you would expect.)

  • Can be used in combination with wall jumping to further exploit your enemy’s confusion

  • Can surprise foes in order to gain maximum advantage
